What to do, by how long it lasts

The steps that matter, in order. The long version is in our guide “Panne de courant au Québec : quoi faire”.

0 to 1 h
First hour
  • Main breaker: a trip at home looks like an outage.
  • Neighbours have lights? Report it at 1 800 790-2424 or through the Hydro-Québec app.
  • Unplug large appliances (cooktop, computers, TV) to avoid the surge when power returns.
  • Leave one lamp switched on: you will know when power is back.
2 h and more
After 2 hours
  • Keep fridge and freezer closed. A full freezer holds its cold about 48 hours, a half-full one about 24.
  • Charge phones and batteries in the car if needed, engine outdoors.
  • Close unused rooms to keep heat in winter.
  • Check the announced restoration time: if it has been pushed back, plan for the next step.
8 h and more
After 8 hours
  • Winter: below 10 °C indoors, exposed pipes freeze. Let a tap trickle, shut the main water valve if you leave.
  • Discard meat, fish and dairy kept above 4 °C for more than two hours.
  • Lost food: Hydro-Québec does not compensate weather outages; check your home insurance.
  • Warming centres: your municipality opens them during major outages.
Safety
Generator and backup heat
  • Generator outdoors only, more than 6 m from windows and doors. Carbon monoxide has no smell.
  • Never plug a generator into a wall outlet: power flows back into the grid and endangers line crews.
  • Barbecue, camping propane heater, camp stove: outdoors, always.
  • A battery-powered carbon monoxide detector is a must whenever a combustion appliance runs.

So the next one does not hit as hard

Two ways to keep the power on: a portable battery for the fridge, the phone and a lamp, or an installed generator that takes over the whole house automatically.

Data: Hydro-Québec's open feed “Ongoing outages and planned service interruptions”, published every 15 minutes. Restoration times, causes and address counts are provided by Hydro-Québec for information only and are not guaranteed; some outage areas may be missing. Regions are assigned by BranchéQC from the municipality nearest the published point; total served addresses were read from Hydro-Québec's regional summary on September 11, 2026. Address search: the Quebec government's iCherche geocoder. Sherbrooke: outages on the Hydro-Sherbrooke municipal grid are read from the City's public map at most once a minute and labelled “Hydro-Sherbrooke” (one subscriber = one address). BranchéQC is an independent service with no ties to Hydro-Québec or Hydro-Sherbrooke. To report an outage: 1 800 790-2424. In case of danger: 911. Hydro-Québec's official Info-pannes site.
