How to choose one: four numbers, in order
- Drainage. Look at your basement floor before you look at any product page. Floor drain below the unit? A gravity hose is simpler and has one less part to fail. No drain? You need a pump, full stop.
- Temperature. If the space is unheated, skip to the desiccant section. If it is heated, any compressor unit with auto defrost will do.

- Efficiency. On a machine that runs for months, Energy Star certification is the one label that reflects a measured threshold rather than a marketing claim.
Why a 50-pint unit is what a 70-pint used to be
This is the single most confusing thing in the category, and it is not a trick played by any one brand. The U.S. Department of Energy changed the conditions its capacity test runs at, and manufacturers restate the same machine at the new, cooler benchmark. Midea’s listing says it outright: 50 pints under the current DOE standard is 70 pints under the 2012 standard. The machine did not shrink; the yardstick moved.
Two consequences. If you are replacing a unit bought before 2019, the equivalent today carries a smaller number on the box — do not size up in a panic. And when you compare two products, check whether both quote DOE, AHAM or “at saturation”. Compressor or desiccant for a cold Canadian basement?
A compressor dehumidifier condenses water on a cold coil. The colder the room, the closer that coil runs to freezing, and the more time the machine spends in a defrost cycle instead of removing water. That is why every basement-grade compressor unit advertises auto defrost — it is managing a limitation, not adding a bonus.
A desiccant model has no cold coil. It passes air through a moisture-absorbing rotor and drives the water off with heat, so low temperature does not frost it. Do you need a pump?
Only if the water cannot fall downhill. With a floor drain below the machine, a gravity hose is the simpler answer and there is one less component to fail. Without one, your options are a built-in pump or emptying a tank by hand every day — and in practice nobody keeps doing that past the first month. Put it centrally, clear of walls and furniture on every side so air can circulate, and decide the drain path before you plug it in. Close the basement windows while it runs — an open window turns the machine into a very expensive way to dehumidify the outdoors. If you are running a hose by gravity, the whole run has to fall: a hose that sags and then rises will back up into the tank and trip the full-tank shutoff, which reads exactly like a broken machine.
What the American reviews leave out
- The unheated basement is normal here. A large share of Canadian basements sit well below the temperature at which a compressor unit is efficient for a good part of the year. American round-ups test in conditioned rooms and rarely rank desiccant models at all.
