Best Air Purifier in Canada (2026): HEPA, CADR and Room Size

Specs checked November 4, 2026 · Version française

Two things decide whether an air purifier does anything useful, and neither is the big square footage in the product title. The first is the filter: true HEPA, or something that only borrows the name. The second is the clean air delivery rate for smoke, measured against the room you actually use. The rest, from Wi-Fi to night lights, is preference.

In Canada the stakes are seasonal. Winter means months of closed windows, with dust, pet dander and cooking residue building up indoors. Summer increasingly brings wildfire smoke that slips into the house even with every window shut.

The short answer

  • Main bedroom: a true HEPA unit with a smoke CADR of at least two thirds of the floor area. The Levoit Core 300-P, at 143 CFM, covers about 215 sq ft.
  • Living room or finished basement: step up to 230 to 250 CFM, such as the Levoit Core 400S-P, or the Vital 200S-P with a pet in the house.
  • Wildfire smoke and odours: true HEPA for the particles plus a real carbon filter for the smell, like the Winix 5510.
  • Never: an ozone generator, or a filter sold as “HEPA-type”.

How we picked, and what we did not do: we have not bench-tested these purifiers. Every specification on this page is quoted from the manufacturer’s own Amazon.ca listing, checked November 4, 2026, and every unit and filter linked here was confirmed in stock in Canada that day. Where a listing omits a number or contradicts itself, we say so. Room sizes marked “by the two-thirds rule” are our own arithmetic on the listed CADR. True HEPA or “HEPA-type”: the filter decides almost everything

A true HEPA filter captures at least 99.97% of particles at 0.3 micron, the size that is hardest to catch. That covers fine dust, pollen, pet dander and the particles in smoke. On the box, look for “True HEPA” or “H13”, a European class that also denotes a high-efficiency filter.

“HEPA-type”, “HEPA-style” and “HEPA-like” guarantee no threshold at all. For allergies, asthma or smoke, skip those units. Some brands use their own names: Blueair calls its filtration HEPASilent and states 99.97% capture down to 0.1 micron. That is the manufacturer’s claim in its own terms.

HEPA does nothing for gases. Activated carbon handles cooking and pet odours, the smell of smoke and part of the volatile compounds from paint and new furniture. A thin carbon sheet saturates quickly, which is why Levoit sells a separate Smoke Remover filter for the Core 300-P. A pre-filter stops hair and large dust before they clog the HEPA layer.

CADR and room size: the two-thirds rule

CADR, the clean air delivery rate, is the volume of filtered air the unit returns each minute, in cubic feet per minute (CFM) in North America. When a listing gives three values, compare the smoke figure: those particles are the finest, so it is the toughest test and the lowest number.

The rule of thumb commonly advised for sizing is simple: smoke CADR should be at least two thirds of the room’s floor area, assuming an 8-foot ceiling. That works out to about five air changes an hour. A 12 by 12 bedroom is 144 sq ft, so you want roughly 96 CFM. The longhand version gives the same answer: 144 sq ft times 8 ft is 1,152 cubic feet, times five changes, divided by 60 minutes, is 96 CFM. With a 9-foot or cathedral ceiling, use the real height.

Room (8 ft ceiling)Floor areaSmoke CADR to look for

Main bedroom200 sq ft133 CFM
Mid-size living room300 sq ft200 CFM
Large living room, basement500 sq ft333 CFM
Open-plan floor800 sq ft533 CFM

Now read the product titles with that in mind. Many quote the area cleaned once an hour, which is a fifth of what the rule asks. The Levoit Core 300-P listing is unusually candid: 1,073 sq ft at one air change, 222 sq ft at 4.8. A room cleaned “in 12.5 minutes” is also 4.8 changes an hour, the useful figure. For an open floor plan, two correctly sized units at either end usually beat one big unit in the middle.

Noise on sleep mode, for the bedroom

Every purifier is loud on high. What matters for sleep is the lowest speed. On this page, Blueair states 19 dB for the 511i Max, Levoit 24 dB in Sleep Mode for the Core 300-P and Core 400S-P and 25 dB for the Core Mini-P, and Coway a range of 24 to 53 dB. These are manufacturer figures, not our measurements.

Run the unit on high in the evening with the door closed, then drop to sleep mode at bedtime. Choose a display that switches off; the Core 300-P and the Coway both allow it.

Ozone generators and ionizers: what to avoid

Some devices sold as purifiers produce ozone on purpose. Health Canada advises against using ozone generators to clean the air in a home: ozone irritates the airways, and it does not remove fine particles the way a HEPA filter does. Skip anything that markets ozone or “activated oxygen”.

Ionizers, UV lamps and plasma features are not needed to clean the air, and some can release a little ozone. If your purifier has one, make sure it can be turned off; the Winix 5510 lists PlasmaWave on top of its filters. A CARB certification on the packaging means the unit has been evaluated for ozone emissions, and the Blueair replacement filter listing states a Zero Ozone certification.

Running cost: electricity, then filters

None of the listings we checked states its wattage in the bullets, so read the rating plate under your unit and use the speed you will actually run. The formula is watts times hours, divided by 1,000, times your rate. Here is a worked example with a 30 W unit running around the clock:

  • 30 W times 24 hours is 0.72 kWh a day, or 21.6 kWh over 30 days.
  • At an example rate of 15 cents per kWh, a round figure and not any province’s tariff: about $3.24 a month, $39.42 a year.
  • In Quebec, on Hydro-Québec’s rate D in effect April 1, 2026, energy above the first 40 kWh a day costs 11.142 cents. Electrically heated homes pass that threshold in winter, so the added use costs about $2.41 a month, $29.28 a year, before taxes.

Then add the filters. Before buying any unit, look up the price and stock of its exact replacement: filters are not interchangeable between models, even within a brand. Levoit warns that its filter life indicator only works with genuine filters. Replace sooner after a long smoke episode, and never wash a disposable HEPA filter.

Wildfire smoke, allergies and pets

Smoke. Fine particles from wildfire smoke get indoors even with the windows closed. Health Canada lists portable HEPA air cleaners among the ways to reduce smoke inside. Make one room your clean room, usually a bedroom, keep its door shut and run the purifier on high. If you have an HRV or a central heat pump, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to limit outdoor air during the episode. Purifiers sell out quickly when smoke arrives, so buy before summer.

Allergies and pets. A HEPA unit in the bedroom reduces the pollen and dander floating in the air, but it does not replace washing bedding in hot water, a good vacuum or, with asthma, your doctor’s advice. With a shedding dog or cat, the pre-filter stops hair, HEPA catches dander and carbon handles the smell: clean the pre-filter more often than the manual suggests.

What the American reviews leave out

  • The closed-window winter. For months, nothing gets aired out. A purifier running on low through the heating season does more for most Canadian homes than one bought in a panic in July.
  • Smoke is now a national season. The 2023 season showed it: smoke from fires in Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia drifted over cities far from any flames. A clean room plan matters from coast to coast, not only in the West.
  • A purifier is not an HRV. A heat recovery ventilator swaps stale air for outdoor air and removes excess humidity and CO2; a purifier does neither, it filters particles in one room. They work together.
  • Your rate, not a U.S. average. Running cost depends on your provincial tariff, which is why we show the formula and a labelled example instead of one number.

A purifier plugs into an ordinary 120 V outlet, so no electrical work is involved. If you are planning a central heat pump or ventilation work and are in Quebec, you can get a quote through BranchéQC; any new circuit is a job for a licensed electrician.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best air purifier in Canada?

The one with a true HEPA filter and a smoke CADR matched to the room you use most. For a main bedroom, the Levoit Core 300-P lists AHAM-verified CADR of 143 CFM for smoke, which covers about 215 sq ft by the two-thirds rule. For a living room, the Levoit Core 400S-P (231 CFM) or Vital 200S-P (250 CFM). For smoke and odours, the Winix 5510 with its carbon filter. For allergies, the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH.

What size air purifier do I need for my room?

Multiply the floor area by two thirds to get the smoke CADR to look for, assuming an 8-foot ceiling. A 12 by 12 bedroom is 144 sq ft, so about 96 CFM. That rule of thumb works out to roughly five air changes an hour. With a higher ceiling, redo the maths with the real volume: floor area times height times five, divided by 60.

What is the difference between true HEPA and HEPA-type?

A true HEPA filter captures at least 99.97% of particles at 0.3 micron, the size hardest to catch. HEPA-type, HEPA-style or HEPA-like promise no such threshold: the filter can look the part without the efficiency. For allergies, asthma or wildfire smoke, buy a unit that says True HEPA or H13.

Do air purifiers work for wildfire smoke?

A true HEPA unit sized for the room captures the fine particles in smoke, and activated carbon reduces the smell. Health Canada lists portable HEPA air cleaners among the ways to reduce smoke indoors. Pick one room, usually a bedroom, keep its door and windows shut, run the purifier on high, and check the filter after the episode.

Are ionizers and ozone air purifiers safe?

Health Canada advises against using ozone generators to clean the air in a home. Ozone irritates the airways and does not remove fine particles the way a HEPA filter does. Skip any device that advertises ozone or activated oxygen. If a purifier has an ionizer, UV lamp or plasma feature, make sure it can be switched off.

How much does it cost to run an air purifier?

Watts times hours, divided by 1,000, times your rate. A 30 W unit running all day uses 0.72 kWh a day, 21.6 kWh a month. At an example rate of 15 cents per kWh that is $3.24 a month; at Hydro-Québec's rate D second tier of 11.142 cents it is about $2.41 before taxes. Add the replacement filters on top.

How often should I replace an air purifier filter?

Follow the listing for your exact model, and replace sooner after a long smoke episode. Levoit states 4 to 6 months for the Core Mini-P and 6 to 8 months for the Core 300-P; Coway says its AP-1512HH filter set lasts up to a year. Never wash a disposable HEPA filter: only some pre-filters are washable.
